Blogging is a powerful tool for businesses to connect with their audience, establish thought leadership, and drive growth. Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just starting out, writing blogs with skill comes in VERY handy when it comes to growing a brand.

What is a blog?

A blog is a type of written, online content that takes the form of an article. If you’re just starting your blog and need some help to learn how to blog, don’t panic – you’re in the right place!

This post serves as an expert guide on how to start your business blog and start seeing the benefits of sharing relevant, regular content with your audience.

Why blog writing matters

Before diving into the nitty-gritty of blog writing, let’s explore why it’s worth doing.

In her masterclass with our members, Ali highlighted several key reasons why incorporating blogging into your marketing strategy is crucial.

Good for Google

Blogging is great for your SEO – aka getting you found on Google. By incorporating relevant keywords and phrases, you increase the chances of your blogs appearing in search engine results, making your business more discoverable to potential customers.

After all, your blog is a regularly updated page on your website, which is always appreciated by search engines seeking to understand your online presence and send relevant web surfers in your direction.

Grow your email list

Blogging offers an effective way to capture email addresses from interested readers. By including opt-in forms and enticing newsletters, you can cultivate a warm lead database to market to (and that data is yours – not rented via a social media platform which could disappear!)

Create a bank of reusable content

Blogging allows you to repurpose your content across multiple channels. A single blog post can be transformed into social media captions, email content, video scripts, and more, extending the reach of your valuable content.

Attract more website visitors

Blogging generates organic traffic to your website, increasing the likelihood of attracting potential customers. By providing informative and engaging content, you nurture leads and encourage them to engage with your brand.

Establish your authority

Regularly publishing high-quality blogs positions you as an expert in your field. This enhanced credibility attracts potential customers and reinforces your brand’s reputation.

So, if you have a blog page gathering dust on your website, it’s time to get that blog off the ground with some well-written, carefully targeted content!

Beginner’s guide: how to plan and write a blog post

Ali shared with us the importance of planning and structuring your blogs effectively to ensure they are engaging, informative, and achieve their intended purpose.

Here’s how to do that.

  1. Identify your audience: understanding your audience’s interests, pain points, and knowledge level is crucial for creating content that resonates with them.
  2. Define your purpose: determine the specific goal of your blog, whether it’s to educate, inform, entertain, or persuade. What type of blog will it be? For example, a how-to post, a listicle, or a more personal blog?
  3. Craft a compelling headline: your headline should capture attention, accurately reflect the blog’s content, and entice readers to click through.
  4. Structure with clarity: use headings, subheadings, and bullet points to organise your content logically, making it easy for readers to follow and absorb information.
  5. Incorporate storytelling: use anecdotes, case studies, and personal experiences to illustrate your points.

Where to find blog post ideas

Before you start writing your first post, it’s time to come up with a blog idea and decide on your blog post title.

You want your blog topic to be relevant to your audience and provide them with valuable information. It should also be something that you are passionate and knowledgeable about.

Ali discusses the importance of building relationships with your audience and understanding their needs before you start writing a blog.

She also shared her tips on how to come up with blog ideas, including:

  • Answer the Public
  • Google
  • Pinterest
  • YouTube
  • Social media polls
  • Customer enquiries and reviews.

Blog writing formula

Not sure where to start when you create a blog?

As a beginner, you should find it handy to follow this formula to help write your first blog post.

After setting aside time to write, the hardest step can be getting started.

How you start your blog writing session off is essential to your feeling of accomplishment – after all, that blank screen can be super daunting and spark an afternoon of procrastination rather than productivity.

So, use this structure to learn how to start actually writing the thing!

  • Headline: you want to make sure your blog title is engaging and snappy, so stick to 60 characters or less and be emotive
  • Introduction: briefly summarise the blog and explain why your audience needs to read it
  • Headers: use headers as section titles to break down the body of your blog post into easy-to-read sections
  • Flavour: add visual appeal and break up text with statistics, quotes, bullet points, and numbered lists
  • Conclusion: summarise the blog and provide a call to action.

Once you’ve nailed all these stages, hooray! It’s time to get your blog online.

Then, once your post is published, you can sit back and wait for ideal customers to flock to read it 🙂

General copywriting tips that apply to blogging

With a 16-year background in copywriting, Ali shared some insider copywriting secrets to make sure your entire blog is engaging and well-written.

(Tip – use these for all kinds of copywriting! One of our members used Ali’s advice and pointers to rewrite her entire website after this masterclass!)

Remember, your blog could be the first place a new potential customer lands on your site, so make sure your personality and expertise shine through.

  1. Write in a conversational tone: the content of your blog should be easy to read, without technical language or jargon.
  2. Vary your sentence structure: don’t use the same sentence structure over and over again. A successful blog mixes it up with a variety of sentence lengths and types to keep your writing interesting.
  3. Use storytelling: stories are a powerful way to connect with your audience and make your writing more memorable. Learn how to write blogs that feature personal anecdotes, customer stories, or case studies to illustrate your points.
  4. Use visuals: Images, videos, and infographics can help break up your text and make your blog more visually appealing. They can also help to convey your message more effectively.
  5. Edit and proofread your work: once you’ve finished writing your blog, take some time to edit and proofread it carefully. This will ensure your writing is clear, error-free, and polished.
  6. Use a call to action: tell your readers what you want them to do after they finish reading your blog post. This could be subscribing to your email list, visiting your website, or sharing your post on social media.
